H.J. Cummins: Nurses' negotiator bargains for a life of her own

Collective bargaining is a little like gambling. And Karen Patek, labor negotiator for the Minnesota Nurses Association for 40 years, has bluffed with the best of them. When Patek grows frustrated, she reflexively crosses her arms and releases a low, throaty "humh." For ideas she considers seriously bad, Patek escalates her response to a still understated: "Now, that is very troublesome to us."
