Lori Murphy waits for two phone calls every day. She does this at work, as a youth-enrichment coordinator for Edina Community Education Services. The rule is that her sons, Connor, 15, and Jack, 12, check in when they let themselves into the house after school. After four years of this, Murphy's maternal anxiety level has dropped to the high-normal range for the hour or two the boys are alone. Still, she doesn't relax until those calls come.
