United Steelworkers announce one-time $240 payment to 75,000 retirees who lost health care coverage

The United Steelworkers union said minimum one-time payments of $240 will be made to up to 75,000 retirees who lost health care coverage as the result of the bankruptcies of Bethlehem Steel, LTV and two other steel producers. The payments will reimburse retirees for Medicare Part B premiums and will be made from a retiree health-care trust fund negotiated by the union when International Steel Group brought the mills out of bankruptcy.
