Trade, grocery unions clash over Wal-Mart

When it comes to building new stores, Wal-Mart is used to opposition. But its plans to relocate within Riverhead have created an unusual rift within Long Island’s typically solidified unions. One opposes it; others embrace it. “It’s a pingpong match … the tale of two unions,” said Riverhead Supervisor Phil Cardinale. It is “unusual, indeed precedent-setting, I think, that the two unions are at loggerheads about the application.” The unions’ quarrel centers on jobs.
